The ultimate act of love
It has been said that the most popular silent prayer in churches is for a husband, and the second most popular one is for a better husband.
Dutch Sheets shares about a couple who discover their teenage son lied to them. Caught skipping school for three days, the boy faced unusual consequences for his actions.
His parents explained that he had broken their trust, and for each day he skipped class he would be grounded and have to spend his afternoons and evenings in the attic, even sleeping and eating there.
As he was sent to the attic his parents sat in the living room, unable to rest or even enjoy dinner. Hours later in the middle of the night the husband asked his wife, "Are you asleep?" She was not, unable to doze off because she couldn't stop thinking about their son, alone in the attic.
Finally the father got up at 2:00 A.M. and went to the attic where he found his son awake and in tears. The father shared, "I can't take away the punishment; there are consequences for your actions. But your mother and I can't bear the thought of you alone up here. So I am going to share your punishment with you."
The father then lay down and hugged his son, and for three nights the father and son shared the attic and their tears and the boy's sentence together.
It is a beautiful picture of redemption and grace, reminiscent of Jesus sharing in our punishment, the ultimate act of love.
The Psalmist shares, "Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies" (Psalm 36:5). The word here for love is hesed, a Hebrew term that means "loyal love," a love that tells us God can be trusted. Whether you are praying for a husband or a wife or a dream, God's love is hesed.
A few months ago musician Steven Curtis Chapman lost his baby daughter in a tragic accident. His family walked through the pain with tremendous faith and strength, and indeed they are still walking.
Shortly before the accident he had written a song that proclaimed everything belongs to God, from the moon and the stars to all of the earth. After losing his daughter, he went back and penned a final verse to the song, "Yours."
I've walked the valley of death's shadow
So deep and dark that I could barely breathe
I've had to let go of more than I could bear
And questioned everything that I believe
But still even here
in this great darkness
A comfort and hope come breaking through
As I can say in life or death
God we belong to you.
May you find great strength wherever you find yourself today in knowing you are not alone. God has entered into the world to mix his tears with ours, to hold us tight, and his love can be trusted.

Steven Curtis Chapman's kids?
How old are all of Steven Curtis Chapman's kids?
You might look him up via his website or in Wikpedia. I can tell you that one of his kids was killed this year when either he or his wife backed over the child with a car by accident. I also believe that this child was adopted. It really ripped the family up as you can imagine. I am a big fan of his. Thanks for posting about him.

This body, this life, this death
While the Bible compares death to a bee sting (1 Corinthians 15:55), those left behind know that the pain can feel more like a devastating blow from which one wonders if they will ever recover.
Psychologists say that grief is so painful in part because it brings such an abrupt change to our daily routine. Though Newton's law may assure us that matter can neither be created nor destroyed, it just changes form, in reality we may know that while in a sense our loved ones are still with us we also know they are somewhere else.
As the final season of the comedy Scrubs came to a close the show took on a more melancholy feel. In one of the last episodes J.D. and Turk were discussing why they became doctors. In a moment of openness they both shared they entered the medical field because they were terrified of death and wanted to find some answers.
Most people are not as honest about their fears. As Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) once said, "Being unable to cure death, sin, and ignorance, men have decided, in order to be happy, not to think about such things."
In 1969 when Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong walked on the moon an amazing event took place that was not broadcast over the airwaves. Aldrin had brought with him a thimble sized communion set.
He read a verse of scripture and then proceeded in a moment of gratitude and worship. He would later write, "I ate the tiny Host and swallowed the wine. I gave thanks for…the Sea of Tranquility…to think: the very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the very first food eaten there, were the communion elements."
Communion, a symbol that there is more to life than just what we can see and feel, a representation of an eternal hope that Heaven is our home.
Few have understood the pain of life and death more than those who have lost a child. In gut-wrenching and in hope infused detail Mary Beth Chapman and Steven Curtis Chapman share of their own such story in the book Choosing to SEE.
Gracefully, they also share of intimate and incredible miracles that happened in the wake of the tragedy of losing their own child.
Steven shares in the song "Beauty Will Rise" the following words of faith: "It would take our breath away to see the beauty that He's made out of the ashes."
I highly encourage you to read their life changing book, no matter what losses or challenges you have faced.
And finally, I have always found Peter Hiatt's words some of the most inspiring when he said, "They'll drop you in a grave and you'll feel a touch, you're not insane. Now you're sane. A voice will say, ‘Friend, let's get out of here! I beat this place.' And you'll see him."
Perhaps as we see that death has been defeated we can more fully live and breathe with gratitude and peace every moment of life.
