Marshall Class5 Guitar Combo Amplifier (5 Watts, 1x10 in.)
The Marshall Class5 Guitar Combo Amplifier (5 Watts, 1x10 in.) features a design created in the legendary 'Bluesbreaker' style. The Marshall Class5 sports a top-loaded, 'Plexi-esque' panel containing treble, volume, middle and bass. It's a simple feature, but one that is the Class5's secret weapon. What you get, is genuine class A tone that is regarded by many guitarists as one of the purest designs. One that provides that smooth second harmonic distortion.
Thanks to the relatively low weight of this amp along with the headphone output, the Marshall Class5 performs equally well as an at home recording amplifier, or a silent practice amp. You will find the tonal character to be superior to anything you would find in any other so called "practice amp."
A dynamic tube tone in a simple no-nonsense package is what this amplifier is all about. The Class5 pushes 5 true Class A watts through a 10 inch Celestion G10F-15 speaker by way of its dual 12AX7 preamp tubes, and a single EL84 power amp tube. This is an amplifier that has been designed for one thing, and that is to deliver pure Class A power.
This amp is manufactured at Marshall headquarters in the heart of the UK. Each Class5 combo amp has been constructed by some of the most experienced hands in the business. It contains specially selected components and precision craftsmanship coupled with solid construction. The Class5 provides the reliability and durability you have come to expect from Marshall.
Marshall Class5 Guitar Combo Amplifier (5 Watts, 1x10 in.) Reviews and Opinions:
The Class5 from Marshall wasn't designed with a lot of features; this is typical of many tube amps in this price range though. It does have a speaker out and headphone out in addition to a 3 band EQ, and is fairly light for its size meaning you won't end up breaking your back after moving the amp. It is a solidly built unit and is well designed.
Many reviewers commented on the fact that there aren't many controls, or they are very basic. But for the price, many people said it was worth every penny. Other reviewers have stated that it is the best small tube amp for the money that they have seen in a long time. It has the classic Marshall sound, and can be crunchy and loud and there is no mistaking the tone, although it isn't limited to just that.
Another reviewer said that the reason they bought this amp was because it was a British made Marshall. They said it appears to be made very well so far. Plus this reviewer also owns a Haze 40 combo amp, and although they like the amp, it wasn't made in the UK. This reviewer felt that the UK Marshalls may be better, but are definitely more expensive.
The amp delivers pure Marshall tube tone, and just like its bigger brother, it distorts when you turn it up. Although this is a very simple amp, some of the best sounding amps, don't have many features at all. It was mentioned by more than a few people though that they would have liked it if this amp had a master volume control.
Although it isn't perfect, there is definitely a certain appeal that this amp has. You can view some of the videos on YouTube and take a look at what it has to offer. For the asking price, you would simply be hard pressed to find a better value elsewhere. One person mentioned that it is of unmistakable Marshall lineage, with just a touch of Vox AC-15 mixed in. If you're looking for a Plexi tone in 5 watts, you probably won't be happy with this. If you're looking for a great tone by itself, this amp will deliver.
The Marshall Class5 Guitar Combo Amplifier is an incredible value. It's packed full of great tone and is just as good if not better than many hand wired boutique amps. A few parts of the amplifier have been constructed with some cheaper materials, but they had to cut costs somewhere to offer it at the price they did.

I'd like to hook an amp head into a combo amp's speaker for use as a cabinet.?
Do I need to unplug the combo amp from the speaker if there are four terminals?
One neg/pos set of terminals is being used by the combo amp. I was planning on using the other two for an external amp head but wasn't sure if I needed to unplug the combo amp from the speaker for safety of said combo amp. Thanks!
Yes, you need to disconnect the speakers form the combo amp's amplifier. You also need to check the impedance of the combo amp's speaker(s) and the impedance rating of the head amp you are going to drive them with. If there is more than one speaker in the combo amp you need to see if it is series or parallel wired. If series, the impedance will be double the number printed on the speaker (if your luck enough to have speakers with it printed on them.) If it is parallel wired, it will be half. Then check the head amp. They almost always have the impedance tolerance printed near the speaker outputs.

Choosing The Right Sound With Guitar Amp Speakers
Depending on whether you play as a hobby in a garage or professionally in clubs, you will have a particular sound that you want to achieve. Choosing a guitar amp speaker will rely on the forum you play in and the loud speaker will contribute to the tone of your guitar. In earlier amp models the frequency would drop off above 3-4 kHz, this would cause some of the harmonics caused from tube distortion to be filtered out. Today, with a better knowledge of why the older speakers sounded the way they did, manufacturers can use their experience and knowledge to design better models with specific voicings.
Different speakers, different sounds. -
The cone and magnetic motor design will govern the sound of a guitar amp speaker. Twelve inch speakers are a clear choice when using four driver cabinets and combos. For a sound that is less bassy, a 10 inch speaker is the way to go.Smaller practice amps and speakers are great for a good sound when recording, however this may be at the risk of your bass end. It may suffer without being used without larger speakers. What is known as the break-up is the way a speakers cone flexes when you push it hard. Don't panic, there is no harm being caused to your speaker. A more compressed, distorted sound will come from thinner, lighter cones as these have a tendency to break up more swiftly. The centre dust cap in a speaker can make you sound vary as well, a harder treble sound will come from speakers with a metal dust cap rather than speakers using fabric.
The lower you go. -
The quality of the way low frequencies are handled is dependent on how well the cone assembly is damped. How the cone assembly is damped relies on the surround and the cone material. Your bass can have a tendency to sound loose is the cone overshoots; if your speaker is damped well you will get a tighter sound from your bass. There is a lot on offer with such brands as Artec, Behringer, Bugera, Laney and Marshall. It will be easy to find your own distinct sound with the guitar amp speaker that suits your needs the best. Compared to earlier speakers, today's speakers are very efficient.. It is easier to get high amplifier power to create the sound you need.
When purchasing a bass amp, you should do a little research and evaluation. The sound you want will not be solely decided by the magnet that is used. The cone and the magnetic motor design also come into play. Prepare to play your best and discuss your options with an expert.
