Is whispering bad for your vocal chords when singing?
I heard that whispering can damage your vocal chords slowly. I whisper sing songs that I know by heart. I sing death metal vocals and I need to know if this is bad for you.
No. You heard wrong.
Sound is produced by the vocal chords by you passing air through them and your "voice" is created by the skin inside being stretched to different lengths. Long and thin equals high sounds, wide (like an O)produces low sounds. Your voice box travels up and down also, but air is always passed through the vocal chords when singing. If you run out of air, your voice disappears.
Whispering is talking without using the vocal chords, so it's perfectly fine BUT NEVER shout, talk or grunt when youre singing or you'll damage your vocal chords. Damge can be permanent just from one "accident" and it can really HURT too!

This is because the exercises target very specific muscles inside your larynx (or voice box) - the correct muscles for singing. When you begin to sing high into your range, the vocal chords learn how to "zip up", actually shortening the length of the vocal chords...
This means that less of the vocal chords are free to vibrate as you sing. Because there is less chord vibrating, it's easier for your vocal chords to vibrate faster... which means you can sing much higher notes!
There are technical names for when your vocal chords form these shortened coordination's...
- When your chords are vibrating across their full length, you are singing in chest voice.
- When you sing a little higher into your range, your chords "zip up" and you begin singing in either a head voice or a mixed voice.

What has actually happened here is your voice has broken into falsetto. Falsetto happens when your vocal chords are unable to hold together. The chords burst open resulting in a light, fluffy sound.
