Les Paul Guitars: Expensive? Not Anymore
Les Paul was a famous guitarist as well as being an originator; therefore it is only natural that Les Paul guitars would be in demand. A pioneer in the field of electric guitars since the time electric guitars had been invented was the company Gibson. It is said that it was the genius of Les Paul which found the solid body electric guitar, which at the beginning looked very strange as he had attached a piece of wood to the neck of his Epiphone guitar to reduce the feed back as he was trying to amplify the sound produced by his guitar. It was not unless and until he had attached a set of wings on to the side of the extra wood to make his guitars seem somewhat normal, that his act was free of ridicule.
The collaboration that resulted in the production of the famous Gibson Les Paul guitars was born out of necessity on both the sides. Gibson wanted to launch a solid body electric guitar in the name of an already established guitarist while Les Paul alone could not achieve the feat of launching his inventions into the market and thus, the partnership between the company and the guitarist was born. Gibson knew that Les Paul was the best guitarist of the times and so it would always be profitable for the company to launch guitars in his name, especially as he was already famous for inventing his own unique guitars sold by Leo Fender, his friend. Les Paul accepted Gibson's terms to endorse the new guitars in his name, but made a few alterations to the designs of the instrument.
The main difference in between solid body guitars of other brands and Gibson Les Paul guitars is in the latter's string arrangement. They are mounted "hollow body style" on top of the guitar in a Les Paul, while in other guitars, the strings pass right through the body. One thing to be noted though, is the fact that this is not something that has any effect on the sound quality of the guitar as the arrangement is simply for style alone. The flashy inserts on the neck and the headstock of the Les Paul guitars add more to the chic factor. The more weighty and thick solid body Les Paul guitars are made from the finest of woods, after all, what can be expected from a world class company like Gibson and a master guitarist who's very invention was nicknamed "The Log"!
Ibanez and Tokai faced lawsuit when they actually copied the Les Paul guitar style from Gibson without their permission, but the dispute have only managed to make the original Les Pauls a more desirable solid body guitar for the collector. There were also a few bass guitars that were sold by Gibson for a decade from 1969 to 1979. Classic, New Century, Supreme, Standard, Studio Baritone, Melody Maker, Studio, Goddess, Menace, Special, Vixen, and Doublecuts are the main models that came out under the Les Paul endorsement and each were unique in the sound that they produced.

Is it possible to play acoustic/classical music on a Les Paul electric guitar?
I need a guitar for any type of music, except for heavy metal/hard rock. I see singers on youtube doing covers of songs, and i was just wandering if i could do this with a Les Paul Custom Electric guitar? For example, i often google chords of songs i like, perhaps Bruno mars songs, or BOB songs. In summary, can i use my electric guitar for a mixture of music styles? Thanks.
Yes, with an electric guitar, you can customize the sound to your specific preference because of the options on the amplifier, guitar, and any effect pedals you may have. Mostly picking a style starts with the type of pickups a guitar has, but I'd think that with the right amount of knob-turning, a LP would be able to achieve the sound your looking for.

Gibson & Les Paul in Perfect Harmony
Guitar legend Les Paul bought the solid body electric guitar to the music world and re shaped the essence of rock and roll. The pioneering recording techniques like studio multi tracking and the electronic echo also came from this acclaimed musician.
It was in 1934 that Les Paul constructed his 1st guitar pick up and in 1941 he had created the prototype for the solid body electric guitar. Made from a 4' wood board with strings, pickup and plug, Paul christened it the "Log". It also incorporated a section of a railroad tie as the base and was designed with two small decorative pieces on it to make it look more like an acoustic guitar.
He built his first recording studio in his L.A. garage in 1945. It was here that he developed multi tracking, close miking and echo delay recording techniques. His right elbow got broken in a motoring accident in '48 and so he could continue to play guitar the surgeon set his elbow at such an angle that he was still able to play.
When the Fender Telecaster was put on the market in 1950, electric guitars suddenly became the must have musical instrument. It was at this time that that Ted McCarty, the president of the Gibson Guitar company, approached Les Paul to become a consultant.
Initially the collaboration between Gibson and Les Paul was conceived to develop 2 models by Les Paul for Sale. These were the Goldtop and the Custom which boasted premium hardware and a striking black finish. Faster than anticipated by McCarty design innovations allowed for Gibson to make a long term series of guitars by Les Paul for sale. Covering a range of price points the range was developed to offer guitars for most skill levels, excluding the total newbie guitar player.
In the early fifties Paul had developed and made his famous Recording Guitar which he put to use for his personal recording and he withheld the rights for Gibson to use this particular design of Les Paul for sale 'til 1971.
Some of the most expensive, desired and covetable guitars today are authentic Les Paul's from the fifties. It is estimated that less than 2000 original examples survive. Were you to find a Les Paul for sale, in excellent condition from say 1959 you could be expected to have to hand over $200,000 - $750,000 US.
Les Paul could be found playing his own Les Paul guitar weekly on stage in New York up until he died in August 2009. His guitar of choice was a 1972 Gibson Recording guitar, much modified over the years with a 1 piece mahogany body and different electronics.
