Whats the best way to record a sax?

i got what ever equipment/software/ acoustically dead room/ wooden natural reverb type room/ hardware. whatever...i got all of it. I master alot of hip hop and record a wide variety of instrements but i'v never recorded a saxophone before.

i gotta a guy coming in ( for free, not a client) to track a saxaphone peice. never recorded one before. what should i do?
condensor/dynamic/
corodiod/super cardiod
close/far
acoustically dead/ natural reverb.

what?
how do you do it?
two mics maybe?
how?
i actually have that exact mic, the sm57. or at least i think i do, by shure?
thanks for the tip.

Eric T was very much on the right track but I don't agree on using compression since it narrows the dynamic range of the track- not unlike sending someone to the plate to hit a home run with a fungo bat. The large diaphragm condenser is the best choice (use phantom power to make it work; any decent preamp or interface should have the option); since the tone comes from the bell and the tone holes, you should raise the microphone in the air (hopefully using a shock mount) and point the element at the middle of the saxophone at least one foot away (a greater distance will pick up more ambient sound, but the reverb factors in more prominently under these conditions). As for natural reverb, if it seems too thick, you won't be able to trim it out; if there is too little, you can always add more in the mix. I'm a big fan of flat and dry, with EQ being used to solve problems rather than sweetening deficiencies in one's sound.
When mixing, try to accentuate the fundamental range of the instrument (comprehensive list at http://www.independentrecording.net/irn/resources/freqchart/main_display.htm) to make it sound like it really should. Between the general reedy nature of modern saxophone setups and excessive EQ settings, too many modern saxophonists sound like they are playing chromatically keyed kazoos.
Don't stick any microphone in the bell even live- the notes for which the bow is closed will clip obnoxiously and you won't capture any of the tone hole sound. Place the microphone (here an SM57 is great because of strong off-axis rejection, so only sounds close to it are amplified) about 3 to 6 inches from the middle of the horn.

Electric Acoustic Guitar Recording - The Optimal Outcome

The electric acoustic guitar is a wonderful and simple piece of equipment for a partner either to the tunes you may have created or even all those you intend to cover. For that reason understanding how to record expertly when trying to play is a thing that lots of people, including myself, have an interest in. Just like a great many others I had absolutely no practical experience when I first started out so I thought it might be a very good thing to put down a bit of helpful details that, with any luck, may help other people:

Any electric acoustic guitar, simply by definition should have a pick up. This may be factory fitted or perhaps some sort of retro add-on. In either case you will see something which will directly get your audio being made by way of a connection. It's also possible to position a microphone on the guitar and link that right into a unit.Consequently you'll find three options - mic on the instrument, makes use of the manufacturer fixed pick ups or perhaps add an retro-fit pick up. When there is a process of obtaining your signal out from the instrument digitally a recording user interface is called for. This is the product which is designed to acquire the transmission, convert it into a relevant form and after that save it. The real key after that will be the calibre of the product used to help you record. The greater grade recorder that you acquire it's probable that the more superior quality final results you're going to end up getting.

The application of guitar effects pedals should likewise be looked at. Some terrific electric acoustic guitar users in fact make use of a lot more special effects than many electric guitar enthusiasts. You'll find so many effects that will merely boost the tone of your instrument slightly and also items like compression pedals can even the sound level between higher and then lower guitar strings. Reverb will certainly mimic the particular audio you can get from playing in a large room, while chorus will give the impression multi-tracking is being used. Any effect can be used directly before the recording device or can be used in the production and engineering of the sound afterwards, and when you probably have more time. The type of pick-up being used can also affect the sound. There are subtle differences between the brands so if you need to fit an after market one there are a few choices that you can ponder, however if your electric acoustic guitar has one fitted then you will probably have to make do. If recording is being done at home then the only restriction on time will be what you have imposed on yourself. If, by chance, you are using a studio then you will want to stick to the allotted time and also make best use of that time because they're highly expensive locations.

And so, to sum it up, the cabability to record guitar playing is fairly painless providing you possess the proper gear. Any sounds which you want to get will be readily available via effects from the performance recording or maybe after recording. Don't be turned off due to modern technology since there are loads of sites around that will help, which include training clips. Typically the electric acoustic guitar is certainly a adaptive as well as super sounding piece of equipment which happens to be ideal for recording.
