To Have Thought There Are Only Acoustic, Bass And Electric Acoustic Guitars
It's fascinating that nowadays, with popular songs no longer regarded as a transient fad aimed solely at teens, that a lot of people still don't realise that the guitar is simply not just either electric acoustic or bass. For the benefit of those that would like to learn about different kinds of guitar and as a consequence various kinds of popular music, I have come up with an extremely short introduction to different types so that you may perhaps wish to learn more from the numerous resources open to you:
Acoustic Guitar: The most common hollow bodied guitar on earth. The hollow body acts as a sound box so there isn't any electronic amplification required. This instrument is used in all musical genres.
Electric Acoustic Guitar: As the acoustic guitar, but with pickups to increase amplification and add effects as appropriate. It will be difficult to distinguish between the acoustic and electric acoustic simply by looking at them. They are able to also be played without amplification.
12 String Guitars: Obviously, has twelve strings which are arranged in pairs. Typically, the G, B and e string pairs (thinner strings) are tuned in unison and the E, A and D pairs (fatter strings) are tuned in octaves. The guitars may be either electric or acoustic and are generally used as a rhythm accompaniment. For some wonderful examples have a listen to The Byrds and folk music.
Solid Body Electric - Basically has a body of either a single or multiple pieces of solid wood that uses electromagnetic pickups to induce a signal. Famous names include Fender Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster and Gibson Les Paul.
Chambered Body Electric - This guitar is also referred to as electro or maybe semi acoustic guitar. Much like the solid body it makes use of electro-magnetic pick-ups in order to generate a signal with the body being constructed from single or possibly multiple bits of wood together with hollow chambers. Most of these will likely be looked upon as possibly arch top guitars or jazz guitars. Well-known examples include the Epiphone Casin0 and Gibson ES335.
Steel - This kind of guitar will be used by laying steel bar or slide placed over the guitar strings as opposed to making use of finger fretting. Lap steels have six or perhaps eight guitar strings with the pedal steel coming with as many as thirteen. Some variations, known as pedal steel guitars have got, unsurprisingly, pedals and also knee levers to vary the tuning along with resonance from the guitar strings. They are likely to get picked not really strummed.
Resonator - This particular guitar makes use of metal resonating cones rather than a soundboard to create sound. The Dobro is a very common name for any resonator guitar and it is typically used the slide and picked instead of strummed. It's likely you'll have heard this on country or bluegrass tracks. George Harrison of The Beatles used one throughout the late sixties and early seventies. A common make of resonator guitar is a National.
Those would be the most popular, however there are a few others that you might run into:
Weissenborn - This is a specific kind of acoustic lap steel guitar, constructed with the body cavity extending underneath the fretboard. Under 5,000 were ever produced.
Baritone - A guitar which has a longer scale length in order that it could be tuned lower. Baritone guitars could be tuned a third, a fourth, or perhaps a fifth lower than regular tuning. These were regularly used by The Beach Boys and in other surf type songs.
Harp Guitar - A guitar with additional low strings meant to be plucked as low-end harmony notes. The low notes (blank) come without a fretboard. They have been around more than 200 years in a variety of types.
Tenor guitars - They are tuned in fifths, C G D A. They've four strings and are somewhat small compared to the common acoustic or electric guitar. Their configuration and sound means they are suited to both rhythm and lead. Famous makers which include Martin and Gibson have made variations in the past.
Guitarrón - It is a substantial, full bodied acoustic guitar, played by Mexican Mariachi groups. It's a fretless, nylon stringed acoustic guitar. Generally used in doubling music notes on the octave, for this reason they have the unconventional tuning of A D G C E A. You'll possibly have noticed one such on film also it was adopted by Scottish group Fairground Attraction during the 1980's.
Russian Guitar - It's a 7 string acoustic guitar and is usually strummed or perhaps finger picked. It's usually tuned in thirds.
You'll find, obviously, different versions for each of such various instruments, however hopefully you will recognise that it is not only about traditional acoustic, electric, bass and electric acoustic guitars. There is also a full selection of models and sounds to educate yourself about.

Acoustic Beginner Online Guitar Lessons - The Upside And The Downside
If you are intending to take guitar lessons, either online or offline, there are a few things you need to get clear about whether you take acoustic guitar lessons before focusing on a particular genre. If you are taking guitar lessons a regular practice schedule is going to start the process of forming callouses on your finger tips and training your muscles to perform the actions involved in guitar playing.
The nylon string acoustic guitar offers some advantages to the novice guitar player. Steel strings tend to slice your fingers if they are not calloused and that is not a pleasant sensation. The slices in the fingers require you to stop playing until they heal. It is much less stressful to toughen your fingers up on nylon strings. Also the nylon string acoustic forces the guitar student to press the strings with enough pressure to make a clean sound. The electric guitar is a little more forgiving in this respect so it is best to train yourself as a guitar player using the acoustic guitar.
All this takes for granted that you are interested in careful, gradual progress as a guitarist. If you are interested in becoming a rock and roll guitar player as soon as possible you could get into it from the start but this will be at the expense of some of the solid training the acoustic gives.
Let's take a look at the kind of experience you are likely to go through if you decide to take online guitar lessons. Instead of observing how you approach the guitar and offering you personal advice on how to play, online guitar lessons will offer you written instructions, maybe supplemented by video, and if you are short on experience and confidence you might have some trouble picking up the basic practices of guitar playing using online acoustic guitar lessons.
Even though there are quite detailed video lessons on how to practice, the online guitar student is in danger of forming bad playing habits. This is why many guitarists recommend that you take at least a few lessons with a live guitar teacher so you will start off in the right way.
When you are deciding whether to take online or offline acoustic guitar lessons the question of a practice regime is going to come up. You have a guitar that you are just learning to tune, you have sore fingers and assorted muscular aches, now you have to start regular daily practice that isn't going to yield too much in the way of instant results. It is going to take some discipline to get through the initial stages of your acoustic guitar lessons, whether you decide on offline or online lessons, so you might need some guidance from a teacher to get you into the habit of regular practice.
