Choosing an Electrical Inspection Certificate Contractor

An electrical inspection certificate is an industry- standard report  which shows that you have had your electrics tested and that they are safe to use.

Electrical Inspection Certificates (EIC) are also referred to as:

  • A fixed wiring test report
  • A fixed wiring certificate
  • A periodic inspection report
  • An electrical inspection report

EICs are required for various reasons. These include:

  • Landlords and employers as proof that standards are being complied with
  • Local authorities for licensing reasons
  • Insurance and mortgage companies
  • Proof that health and safety standards are being met

It is a legal requirement under the BS7671:2008 Requirements for Electrical Installations (17th Edition) that "every new installation and alteration or extension to an existing installation be inspected and tested before being put into service. It is also recommended that all fixed wiring installations be tested for safety periodically".

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 state:

"As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger". (Regulation 4 (2)

"System' means an electrical system in which all the electrical equipment is, or may be, electrically connected to a common source of electrical energy and includes such source and such equipment". (Regulation 2 (1))

"Electrical equipment includes anything used, intended to be used or installed for use, to generate, provide, transmit, transform, rectify, convert, conduct, distribute, control, store, measure or use electrical energy". (Regulation 2 (1)

Choosing a Contractor

Companies are advised to use an electrical contractor who has been approved by a body such as the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA)  or the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC).

These organisations maintain a register of electricians who have been tested and proven their competence. Electricians are not just tested once but are re-assessed on a regular basis to prove their practices and skills are still up to standard.

Electrical contractors are thoroughly checked, providing reassurance that your electrics will be safe. Registration bodies look at a sample of each contractor's work that is representative. This includes inspecting:

  • Premises
  • Documents
  • Equipment
  • Competence of staff

Although enrolment with a body such as the NICEIC or the ECA is voluntary, all competent electricians will want to highlight their safety standards. When you need an electrical inspection certificate, you can search on the NICEIC or ECA website to find an approved contractor in your area.

How to save on electricity

Electricity is an essential requirement for modern homes, and we rely on its power for everything from basic lighting and food storage to entertainment systems such as televisions and computers. However, just because you're filling your house with ever more electronic gadgets doesn't necessarily mean your electricity bills need to increase too - you simply need to use moderation and common sense to avoid wasting electrical power.

Some people are extremely cautious when it comes to electricity, switching off the mains every time they leave the house to avoid accidents occurring, however this is not a practical option for all households - especially as it would mean fridges and freezers defrosting and burglar alarms being deactivated. You don't have to take such extreme measures to save money on your electricity bills, though avoiding leaving devices such as televisions and computer monitors on standby is a good way to reduce wasted energy.

If you're concerned that it's your own forgetfulness or bad habits that may be contributing to your steep electricity bills, there are ways to remedy this problem - including fitting timers to systems such as your lights, which will switch them off if you leave a room for a certain period of time. These automatic timers are inexpensive, and can soon pay for themselves in terms of electricity saved, as lighting is one of the biggest contributors of household electricity bills.

The type of lighting you use can also play its role in this, with fluorescent lighting strips using less electricity than standard bulbs. If you prefer standard bulbs however, you don't have to get rid of these entirely - simply make the switch to specialised energy-saving light bulbs, which produce the same level of illumination at a significantly lower wattage.

If you're committed to the idea of reducing your reliance on standard electricity sources, you may wish to investigate renewable energy, such as wind and solar power. However, at present these generators can be quite costly and inconvenient for many households, though government incentives should see solar PV panels becoming a more affordable option in the coming years.

Electricity saving measures aren't limited to homes, of course, but are also suitable for business premises, where rising energy bills can present an even bigger problem. Even if you operate a large business, there are many ways you can reduce the amount of electricity you use - such as replacing escalators with stairs and air conditioning with fans, and replacing old, inefficient equipment with Energy Star rated devices designed to save electricity.
