Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount Review

If you're an avid cyclist who likes the idea of carrying your bikes on the roof of your vehicle, then you will do well to look at Yakima's range as they have a great reputation for manufacturing bike racks which are quality, durable and sturdy.

The Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount is a high end roof top rack from Yakima designed to carry one bike. Its standout feature is that the mount holds on to your bikes wheel, not the frame so you don't need to remove your bikes front wheel to mount the bike thus providing a high level of convenience. Here, we'll delve into some of the HighRoller's key features to help determine if it's the right choice for you.

Features of the Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount

  • Capacity for 1 bike
  • Compatibility: square bar, round bars, most factory bars
  • Recommended for hauling bikes- No Locks included
  • 1 year Manufacturer Warranty

Loading and Unloading

Mounting and un-mounting your bike is quick and easy due to the way Yakima have cleverly designed this rack. It takes about five minutes in total.

To load a bike, first you need to rotate the front hoop upwards, and then set the sizing to match the size of your bikes front wheel. To do this, you just flip the lever down then move it up to the appropriate position then close the lever. The sizing is clearly indicated, so this is easy to follow. Next, you need to go to the rear of the rack and release the wheel strap by pressing the red lever.

Now you're ready to lift your bike onto the rack. The rear wheel tray slides back and forth, so this makes getting the bike correctly positioned easy to do. Get the rear wheel into the tray to take some of the weight off the bike, and then guide the front wheel into the front hoop. Now the bike is position, you need to lift the rear hoop into place, which then secures the front wheel. A micro ratchet is built into the hinge, so this holds the wheel into place allowing you to secure the rear wheel with ease and not worry about the bike falling out of position.

Next, you need to tighten the dial underneath the rear hoop; this gives extra grip onto your front wheel to keep it secure. Finally, to secure the rear wheel you need to insert the strap into the buckle, and then use the lever to tighten it securely.

On The Road

On the road, the HighRoller performs really well. The bike is kept very secure and stable; there is no sway or wobble even when you mount a bike with larger tires.

Security and Compatibility

An SKS cable is integrated, but unfortunately SKS lock cores are not included so if you want to securely lock the rack to your vehicle and lock your bike to the rack then you have to purchase these separately.

Also bear in mind if your vehicle has a factory rack crossbar, then you need to purchase Mighty Mounts separately for the rack to be compatible because only standard mounts are included.

Final Thoughts

The Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount is an excellent bike rack. It's sleek and compact, in addition to being stable, secure and easy to use. Due to its clever design, you don't need to worry about the possibility of your bikes frame being scratched because it holds on to your bikes wheel, not the frame.

On the downside, it doesn't come with SKS lock cores so if you want your bike and rack to be kept secure you will have to pay out additional costs.

Overall, I recommend the HighRoller if you're looking for a versatile high end roof top rack, but don't mind spending that bit extra for security.

I need a new vacuum, Which do you think is best and recommend?

Since I bought new carpeting, it shows paths were there is the most traffic. My vacuum doesn't seem to pull the pile up. Do you think this is the carpet (it was of high quality) or the vacuum. My stick vac seems to do the job better than my full size upright. What is your opinion?

Hi,I think it is the vacuum. A friend recently bought a Eureka boss smart vac ultra 4870 and she loves it. She said it was recommended by a leading consumer magazine and rated right up there with higher priced vacuums. It was priced around 150.00 and really cleans carpets and bare floors. Has hepa filtration, 8 carpet settings, convenient tools and ability to control suction when using tools.Another friend has a Dyson that she loves but they are more expensive. Hope this helps.

Stationary Bikes – Upright vs Stationary

So you are in the market to buy an exercise bike, and all of a sudden, you realize you have a choice to make: upright or recumbent? These are the two popular styles of stationary bikes on the market nowadays. How you decide which style is best for you will depend on a few things like budget, available space and what you find more comfortable.

Upright Bikes

These are the older generation of exercise bikes, which many people are familiar with. These bikes are typically used like a normal road bike, designed to simulate the real-world experience of riding a bike in the outdoors. For example, you could simulate the experience of climbing hills and other hurdles simply by standing up and pumping the pedals harder.

One of the drawbacks to this type of bike is the seat – it can get quite uncomfortable especially for the longer sessions. On the plus side, upright bikes tend to be smaller and take up much less space, making them a very popular indoor bike trainer. And since this is true, smaller bikes equate to less material needed to build them; that translates to an overall lower price.

Recumbent Bikes

Chances are some people may not know what a recumbent bike really is. Perhaps this is because the recumbent stationary bike is a newer type of bike to hit the marketplace. The advantage of this kind of bike is the positioning of the seat, which is more similar to a chair.  With this style of stationary bike you sit lower and your legs extend out in front of you instead of underneath you. Many people prefer this as it leads to a more comfortable position while maintaining great stationary bike workouts.

They do tend to be bigger in size, bulkier by nature, and have more bells and whistles than their upright counterparts. For this reason, recumbent bikes may end up costing you more money, but the benefits just might outweigh the price.

Which Is Better?

Putting both bikes together, side by side, you can easily see the difference between them. When you consider the ride experience, the comfort levels, the size and the ease of storage, it really just comes down you how you plan on using the bike. If you are trying to simulate real world biking, then the upright is your kind of bike. However, if comfort is of greater importance, seek out the recumbent.

Always remember what your exercise goal is, and make sure to take some time out to "test drive" the bikes at your local retailer. You can do this, and then return home to come online and do any research needed before seeking out the best deal to create a healthier you.
