When to use Digital Tele-converter?

I have a Canon Powershot S5 digital camera, and one of the features is a Digital Tele-converter that I can set to 1.6 or 2.0. It digitally "converts" the lens as if it were a telephoto lens. I can also take a picture without this tele-converter just by zooming in on the subject. Supposedly using the tele-converter reduces camera shake by using a smaller aperture, or something like that.

I've taken photos of the same things with and without the tele-converter and I can't tell the difference. My question is, when would I want to use the Digital Tele-converter?
To clarify - the camera has optical zoom up to 12x then digital zoom up to 48x.

The photos I took for test purposes were all in the digital zoom range.

Not sure why they'd offer this feature if it's not useful at some point?

I digital zoom is is just like cropping a photo in-camera.

Imagine you were taking a picture of your friend at the opposite side of the room. You could zoom in with the lens so his face fills the frame or you could just take the picture zoomed out and then chop all the edges off the photo so all that's left is his face. Obviously, that second option is no good and that's all that digital zoom is.

The aperture comes into play because as you add more glass with extra lenses or even as you extend a typical zoom lens it will "lose" light. Since a digital zoom has nothing to do with the lens, you don't have this problem. But that's just a foolish way of trying to make you think digital zoom is something it's not.
