How to Select the Best Guitar Package

As a beginner you will need the biggest leg up you can get, and the world of musical instruments can be quite confusing at first. In this article we look at how you can buy the best guitar package to suit your needs.

Let us begin by listing that is included in most guitar packages:

  • Electric or acoustic guitar
  • Strap
  • Stand
  • Tuner
  • Tuition book
  • Amp (if electric)
  • Strings
  • Plectrums

You may not need all of these, but you may also need more.

If you are buying an acoustic guitar package you will not receive an amp which is fine because the guitar itself produces the sound. Unlike an electric guitar that requires amplification.

If you do not intend on standing up to play, you do not need a strap. A guitar strap is not a necessity, more a frivolous extra you can use to pose in front of the mirror with your new axe!

Most guitar packages don't actually include a stand; I would consider this a necessity. You need somewhere to place your guitar where the machine heads are free from obstruction which means it will not be forced out of tune easily.

A guitar tuner on the other hand, is not necessary. Well it is – you need to be able to tune your guitar. But you can get these online. In fact most smartphones now have a guitar tuner app, so you don't need to buy a package with one of these in.

Plectrums and spare strings are required. I would buy more of these actually. I would also buy extra jack leads if you're getting an electric guitar because these tend to break quickly.

Most packages contain tuition books and if you're lucky, it might even include a free guitar lesson. If you can get one of these it'll give you a rolling start in your quest to learn the guitar.

The best thing you can do is take this information and shop around. I would suggest you look to spend around £150 for a guitar package as this will hover between a cheap and nasty guitar and a semi-decent one. Bear in mind that you will not get a high-end guitar in a package because they are aimed at beginners, and beginners simply don't need expensive Fenders.
