How do I play softly on my violin?
I've been playing violin for one to two years. I use a lot of rosin, but I'm not really sure why whenever I play, my violin sounds so loud and it seems like it screams. When my teacher plays violin, it's so soft and flows nicely, but when I play, it so loud. How do I make the music more quiet? Am I doing something wrong?
The above answer is WRONG!
Do not under any circumstances keep your elbow stationary and only bow from your shoulder. This will cause a lot of discomfort and pain over time and is simply wrong on so many other levels. It is unfathomable to me that anyone would teach someone to play only from their shoulder without moving their elbow and anyone who does so is a terrible violin teacher. Also to play softer, depending on the sound you want, try playing closer to the fingerboard, not in the middle.
Also, ask your teacher about it. There is probably a reason that they haven't addressed it before (you're probably currently working on another technique issue) but if you ask I am sure that your teacher will show you. After all it's their job.
