What pickups to buy for an electric guitar?
I've got an HSS Strat Style guitar that I want to replace the pickups in, but I simply can't decide on a balance between price and sound. I'm willing to pay about $130 tops for just pickups, but I'm willing to increase for a loaded pickguard. Ideally, an EMG DG20 is at the top of my list, but at $310 I just can't bring myself to get them. I'm not opposed to buying a SSS pickguard and going to single coils.
For the neck, I want something really clean and clear. David Gilmour-sounding
Middle position, undecided. Might just leave a dummy single coil in there
Bridge, I want something warm that can be pushed over the edge when I want it to. Classic rock style
I've gathered these pickups that I like:
Seymour Duncan '59 humbucker
Seymour Duncan JB humbucker
Seymour Duncan Cool Rails
Fender Texas Special single coils
EMG SA single coils
I'd like to have passive pickups, but I'll find a place for a battery if active is the way to go.
All I can really say is that I think for the bridge humbucker the Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates blows the JB away. I have both. Can't really add much on the single coil side other than I like Texas Specials.
