Help with my guitar pickups?
I've pretty much decided on my pickup choice now I just need some advice on what to do next. I have a 2009 American deluxe stratocaster with the SCN pickups with the S-1 switch. I want to change my pickups out to Dimarzio paf's with a coil tap. I'm going to start fresh with a new pickguard pots and all. I'm going to just remove the stock loaded pickguard and put it to the side. I guess I need help getting a list of things to order. I'm wanting that nice single coil clean strat sound and when I need to use the coil tap and turn on some distortion to get some nice metal sounds. I'm 99% sure I'm going to use Dimarzio PAF in the bridge but I'm not sure what to use in the middle and neck position. Thanks for the help.
I did something similar to an '86 Japanese strat 20 years ago. But that was a $300 dollar guitar, not $1500. It's your nickel. If the body is routed for single coils you'll need to rout it for the PAF at the bridge. By coil tap if you mean cutting a humbucker in half to get single coil tone you'll also get single coil hum. Also, due to the difference in how single coil and humbucker magnets are arranged the sound is not quite the same. I ran the four wires from my bridge humbucker (Dimarzio X2N) to a 4 pole 6 throw rotary switch that was hiding in place of the middle volume knob and used the normal volume knob so it didn't look out of place. That gave me series (for drive), parallel (for highs and clarity), bridge side single coil, mid side single coil, or bridge pickup off. Have you considered sticking with the classic look but a different bridge pickup like a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail which could still be switched series or parallel for drive or clarity? I'm not pushing SDs, they're just one option out there.
