Olympus PC III 7 x 21 Classic Binocular

Deep Focus

Zoom in, zoom out!

Valentine’s Day is approaching and it’ll mark our first anniversary. It’s been a year since I proposed to Shanaya and she said ‘yes’! She didn’t stand a chance of refusing anyway! After all, being neighbours for the last 15 years, I did know quite a lot about her likes and dislikes. My inspiration being the blockbuster, Devdas, in which Shah Rukh, (and later his grandma) used binoculars to ‘bird-watch’ Aishwarya Rai. Funny, but true! Being a modest boy who maintained a ‘safe’ distance from women, the binoculars were my only hope to get closer to gorgeous Paro …I mean gorgeous Shanaya. I bought the Olympus Binoculars and set to watching my soon-to-be lady-love closely. Seemed like my homework paid. I swayed Shanaya off her feet last Valentine’s with a bunch of bright yellow sunflowers and a home-made chocolate truffle.

I always found giving drop-dead red roses…the long-stemmed ones, to beautiful girls, too clichéd (roses to sab dete hain!). For an entire week before D-Day, I used to adjust the field range of my Olympus Binoculars to watch Shanaya placing a bunch of bright blooming sunflowers in the flower vase in her room. So sunflowers it was. I was never a cook. Forget full-fledged cooking, I didn’t even know how to make tea! Once again, the Olympus Binoculars came to my aid. I zoomed in to her kitchen and studied the difference between flour and baking powder (how to differentiate man? both looked similar), and putting all that jazz together made that perfect chocolate truffle. Phew! Quite a task!

What I couldn’t do in years, my Olympus Binoculars helped me do in a month’s time. I watched and watched. The binoculars erased the distance between her and me (15 ft of painful distance between her balcony and mine!) I learnt that she returned from college around 5 p.m. She loved dogs (and hated cats). She loved wearing big silver danglers in her ears . My binoculars gave me a peek into the minutest of details about her. From the number of plants in her balcony to the number of soft-toys in her room. The subjects she studied, the way she twitched her nose and the cute dimple that fell on her left cheek while laughing.

Then came D-Day. I dressed up and prepared myself to confront her on her way to college. I adjusted the field of view of my Olympus Binoculars. A pink figure appeared and seemed to be walking closer and closer. Suddenly it was right in front of me! (Thanks to the near focus distance of my binoculars) I dashed out and landed straight on my knees in the middle of the road. There stood Shanaya, looking stunning in her ‘taken aback’ expression.

Kirk Whalum and "Everything is Everything"..The Music of Donny Hathaway

Kirk was still touring for The Gospel According To Jazz Chapter III CD, which he released just five months ago, when he was approached about creating this CD.  In efforts of giving this extraordinary project the justice that is not an option, Kirk collaborated with the "best of the best" in paying homage to Mr. Donny Hathaway, Jeff Golub, Rick Braun, Gil Goldstein, John Stoddart, Christian McBride, Robert Randolph, Musiq Soulchild, and the "Princes" Lelah Hathaway herself are all a part of this phenomenal collection of incomparable chart-topping works of magic called music.

Each song on this CD is absolutely lively and enjoyable, mellow and soothing, and bottom line immeasurably impressive.  The solos by Musiq Souldchild and Lelah Hathaway are moving. I know that Mr. Hathaway would be extremely proud to know how he has left such a permanent stamp of his style in the world of music.

Kirk will be performing at the Scott Theatre in Fort Worth, TX on both August 21st and 22nd of 2010 at 5pm and 8pm on both days.  Kirk intends to share some of the songs from the Everything is Everything CD, which ironically, Donny Hathaway's Everything is Everything is record is the very first record that Kirk ever owned and played the bass guitar to.

To learn more about the concert you can go to www.fwcac.com, but unfortunately you will have to wait until August 31st before the CD hits the stores, so do not miss out on a preview at the concert this weekend.
