What You Need to Know About Guitar Pickups from TradeTang

Aside from learning the basic skills necessary in playing a guitar, you will also have to learn about all the accessories that come along with one. But before you jump into accessories, you should know by now the different parts of the guitar, even if it's only the acoustic type of guitar. Now in order to understand guitar pickups, you need to know about the guitar's head, body, bridge, sound hole, and fret board of an acoustic guitar. Although electric guitar are different from acoustic ones, their parts are fundamentally the same.

So now, let us get to it. What are guitar pickups and why do they have musicians up in a bunch, in a good way? Pickups amply named so due to their ability to pick up vibrations from the guitar strings as they struck which then converted into electrical signals. The signals are then sent to an amplifier, which converts it back into audible sound. Guitar pickups are necessary in creating the distinct sound electrical guitars make. However, pickups can also be used on acoustic electric guitar for more amplification without an amplifier.

There are fundamentally two types of guitar pickups available on the market for all musicians. The biggest determining factor for any buyer would ultimately be the price of the pickup. Cheaper versions are always present. However, they may not perform as good as the higher priced ones. You should always remember to test the product before you decide to purchase it. If you are using several guitar pickups on your guitar, you might consider replacing them one by one and not all at once.

As for the types of guitar pickups, there are two—single coil and dual coil or the Humbucker. Single coil guitar pickups were the first type to be invented. They are known to produce bright and clear sounds with a metallic tone. However, there have been problems with interference when it comes to this type. The second type of pickups, the dual coil pickups, eradicated the hum produced with the first type.  This type of pickup is known to create warm tones.

Would two single coil pickups from a Strat be able to replace a humbucker on my SG?

Title pretty much says all, I have an Epiphone SG and I think it may need a new pickup, to save money could I just take 2 of my Strat pickups and fit them where the SG humbucker should be?

Why do you think it needs a new pickup? Did it quit working all together? Pickups rarely just go bad. It's probably some kind of a wiring problem like a loose wire or broken wire. Most likely coming from the pickup selector ( toggle switch ). You could put two single coils in there but they won't work as a humbucker. A humbucker is essentially two single coil pickups wired together but the two coils in a humbucker share one large magnet, and the coils are wound opposite each other in order to cancel out the hum. Thus the name ''humbuckers''. So , if you put the single coils in there they would still just be single coils.Like I said before though the problem is probably in the wiring. I would just take it to a tech and have it checked out.
