Origin of coat hangers

A clothes hanger is a device in the shape of human shoulders to facilitate the hanging of clothes. Hangers are a great way to store, organize and display garments and outerwear in style. There are three basic types of clothes hangers. The first is the wire hanger. Wire hangers are a sleek, sturdy and space-saving clothing storage solution for garments in any closet. No one officially knows who made the first coat hanger and what it may have looked like. It is widely believed that wire hanger is probably the prototype for every other hanger design. Throughout most of the 18th century, clothing either hung on hooks or was laid flat for storage. Necessity breeds invention. So, who gave the luxurious necessity? We could say it was women that gave the necessity. In Victorian, women's bustles and skirts needed careful and delicate storage and hanger inventors and manufacturers provided them different kinds of adjustable devices designed to prevent wrinkles and creasing. Hangers improved quickly and different kinds of hangers were soon invented.

Some historians believe that today's most used hanger, the shoulder-shaped wire hanger, was inspired by a coat hook. The Timberlake Wire and Novelty Company located in Jackson, Mississippi, required more coat hooks. The dilemma of having too many coats and not enough hooks was solved by an employee: Parkhouse. He shaped a string of wire into two ovals, then, by bending the ends, he created the shape of a hook. It is Albert J. Parkhouse who brought the original standard hanger into the world.

In 1906 Meyer May, a men's clothier from Grand Rapids, MI became the first retailer to hold his garments on wishbone style wooden coat hangers. In 1932, hanger designer Schuyler Hulett patented an improved design. He added cardboard tubes which were mounted on the lower and upper parts of the wire, in order to prevent wrinkles. In 1935, another improvement made the hanger more convenient. A lower cardboard tube to accommodate pants was added and this kind of inexpensive hanger is stilled used in expensive shops as it is a better choice for hanging clothes temporarily.
