A Guide On How To String A Guitar

To maintain your guitar properly, it is very important that you string it often. Most guitarists prefer stringing the guitar to maintain it for a long time. The process of stringing is not as difficult as it seems but it should be done in the right way to prevent the guitar from getting out of tune. But you don't have to worry. This article will help you with the information about stringing a guitar.

The fundamentals of stringing a guitar

The very first thing that you need to know about stringing a guitar is the right brand of strings that suits your guitar the most. Both electric and acoustic guitars have strings that are made by twisting a wrap wire around a metal wire. Various kinds of materials are used in the wrap wire like nylon, nickel, stainless steel and bronze. These materials decide on the sound of the string.

The diameter of the string should be an important point to be kept in mind when you are buying a set of strings. These sets are available in numbers that determine the diameter in inches of either of the first string or both the first and the last.

Replacing guitar strings - The process

Suppose, you break a string and you need to replace it. It is better if you replace the entire set instead of the single string that is broken. This is mainly advised because it has been seen that a new string always sound different from the older ones. When you are replacing the strings, make sure that you have oiled the fret-board with olive or walnut or linseed oil and have also polished the guitar using a guitar polish.

At first, you need to secure the 6th string till the bridge piece or the guitar's tail. Then align the tuning peg with nut slot and then the string should be put through the tuning peg hole. Remember to keep 5 cm in between the string and fret-board. This leaves space for strings to make 2 to 3 windings. Don't forget to make sure that the wraps are properly spread about the post and don't overlap. The windings should be done from the top to the bottom and it should not be excess in numbers as it causes slipping of strings.

With the help of a string winder or a tuning fork, bend the string upwards as well as turn the tuner in a clockwise direction till the strings attain high pitch. Pull and stretch the string at the midway point and further stretch it once the tuning is done. This would prevent the string from going out of tune. Cut the excess string with the help of a needle-nose pliers or a wire cutter. Then, repeat the process for the other five strings as well.

Changing of strings usually depend a lot on the usage time and maintenance. Generally, it is when the guitar strings lose its brilliance and intonation, it requires a replacement. If you are a regular guitar player, then you must change your guitar strings within four to eight weeks. This is specially done to make sure the longevity and playability of the guitar. Following these suggestions, you can very easily go for stringing the guitar in a more proper way.
