Drum Tuning Tips - Learn How To Tune A Drum Set

We're going to share some drum tuning tips on how to tune a drum set. Drum set tuning is the art of adjusting your drum's sound to make a pleasant tone. Drum tuning adjusts a drum's pitch as well as the tonal quality. When you tune guitar's you're just focusing on tuning the sound to a certain pitch. You can add dampeners to or use different type of drum heads to change your drums sound. What we're actually going to focus on is drum head tension adjustments. These are things you should do as a beginner when getting your new set.

The drum head is attached to the actual shell using lugs that press on the shell through hoops. This is what is present on common drum kits. Place the hoop and the head on the shell if you are starting to assemble your drum. Make sure to secure them by adding the hardware. After that, use the drum key to lightly turn the lugs until you feel that first sign of resistance. It's easier to find the first point of resistance if you use a drum key as opposed to your fingers. Do this for both heads if your drum has heads on both sides.

Start turning each lug the same amount to begin your drum tuning process. 360 degrees is a good start. Tune the top head first then the bottom head, if your drum has two heads. The lugs will stretch the head by pushing it down onto the shell. A higher pitch occurs when there is more tension on the head, just like a string instrument. The drums will give the clearest sound as long the head's tension is the same all around.

The drum should have the same tension on each diameter, since the lugs are the same all around. We are going to test the tension by listening to the pitch for this tuning tip. Start from this step if the drum is already assembled. Or you can start fresh and loosen the lugs all the way. Tap your drum head at a spot right in front of the lug to test the pitch. If you find that a certain spot has a lower pitch, tighten the lug. On the other hand, if it has a higher pitch, loosen the lug. Repeat this for all spots until they have the same pitch.

Overtones might cause you to have trouble hearing the pitch. If this occurs place your finger at the center of the drum while tapping. Take off the snare wires if you are tuning a snare drum

Tuning the top drum head is what affects a drum's pitch the most. A looser head will produce a lower pitch, while a tighter head will produce a higher pitch. Tuning the bottom head mostly affects the drums ringing and tone. If you tune the top head to the same pitch as the bottom hear, the heads will work together to make the sound and vibrate at the same frequency. The sound will last longer and ring out as a result. If you tune the drum heads differently, it will dampen the sound and the vibrations will work against the top drum head. It will create a fuller sound as well as produce a different pitch. Those are a few drum tuning tips on how to tune a drum set.

In a drum set, what is the difference between the type of hoops it has?

Ex: die-cast hoops,chrome,brass,etc.

The most common hoops are triple-flanged. They are usually steel but can be brass and are usually found at 2.3mm thick, or lighter ones at 1.6mm. Diecast are heavier than triple-flanged. Some insist they "focus the sound" but really they just make for meatier rimshots and sturdier drums. "S-hoops" are somewhere in between. Single or double flanged hoops are like bass drum hoops; they need clips in order to recieve tension rods. These are very uncommon on modern drums but can be as heavy as diecast hoops. Any advantage they have over triple-flanged or diecast hoops is purely asthetic cool-factor. Wood hoops are the classiest and most exspensive. They make the drums warmer and remove some of the metalic high frequencies. The can either be thin with clips like a bass drum's or thick with holes drilled (often reffered to as Yamaha-style). Both are susceptable to wear and tear from rim shots.

Any difference in finish: Chrome, brass, nickel, black, etc. is going to be purely asthetic. Just know that chrome can pit, brass can patina, and anything else, like black, can chip or peel if not cared for properly.

Chrome triple-flanged hoops will be adequate for all but the hardest hitters. Diecast on a drumkit usually indicates a better kit, as they are more exspensive and robust. If you're a serious metal drummer, diecasts might be worth the investment at least on your snare drum. If you play quiet music and find your self doing lots of cross-stick rim clicks, wood hoops on your snare can really give the click a more authentic clave sound.

How Native American Drums Play A Spiritual Role In Indigenous Culture

Native American drums are undeniably the most loved Native American instruments among Native and non Indian people alike. Drums for hundreds of years have always been at the center of Indian lifestyle, forming what is the channel of religion and spirituality as well as special days where a pow wow drum is center stage.

Indian tribes in North America history have all used drums in various ways to interact with a higher power known to most as the Great Spirit. To Native people, Indian drums are much more than just decorations or nice musical instruments. American Indian drums are thought to speak to the drummer. Native drums being made in a circle represent the earth and life. The most identifiable being hoop drums and shaman drums which are Indian hand drums used in many personal healing and religious ceremonies as well as public ceremonies such as a Native American powwow.

The hide of the animal that is stretched over the ring brings with it unique characteristics of the spirit of the animal and brings a sense of life to the drum when played. Many people think of beating a drum to make a sound, but to Native drummers and those involved in modern drumming groups and drum circles, the desire is to draw out the sound. The beating drum is compared to the beating of a human heart and is said to represent the heart beat of the earth which is a belief that is classic Native American. Drums in this way become the channel to connect one's spirit with that of the earth and the Great Spirit through out the history of American Indians.

Native American Indian drums have a rich culture and because they are so important they are used in not only music but art and dance as well. Decorating a drum becomes a very personal artwork to the owner. The Indian drummer becomes an artist and communicates impressions of his inner feelings and beliefs in his Indian art. Some American Indian tribes use animals to adorn their drums and others use geometric patterns and everything in between. In some Native cultures the drummer will place an item of personal value inside the drum to permanently join himself with his hand drum.

The different Native American images that the artwork on the drums depict is usually painted with natural earth colors taken from nature. Some are dull and others are bright coming from flowers, roots, berries, bark or herbs that are boiled to release their unique earth tones. Other Native American drums are decorated with iron oxide which is a naturally occurring red rock that can be easily crushed. When mixed with water, it produces a rich orange red dye that is much like paint and is indicative if the surrounding hillsides and rock formations like those of the beautiful Arizona red rock canyons. The region of Sedona is thought to be a special place with spiritual power like the energy created by American Indian drums.

The goal of Native American Education except for those Indian boarding schools that have tried to stamp out Native culture has always involved the sharing of beliefs through music, songs, stories and legends. It is in harmony with these methods of learning that the communication and cultural importance has been found in the use of drums. If you are interested in the spiritual aspects of life as pertain to Indian beliefs, you will get a lot out of owning and playing Native American drums.
