One raw hot chili pepper gives you 182% of the RDA for vitamin C & lots of nutrition - pepper is high in vitamin A. It also contains vitamin B6, vitamin E, vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium and manganese.

There is some evidence that capsaicin may help treat heartburn and circulatory problems

I use a LOT of cayenne pepper, not for any magical properties but because I like spicy foods. I just ordered a pound of Habanero & a pound of green chile powder & I'm a fanatic about eating foods for health. I choose peppers & all the spices.

Mucus flowing is a good thing. Mucus is a part of the lymph fluids & when the lymph fluids are flowing, the body is cleaning out toxins. Lymph fluids circulate throughout the body but unlike the blood circulatory system it doesn't have a built in pumping method. Stagnant lymph fluids can breed bacterial infections. If the mucus created was restricted to or flowing from the intestinal tract, I guess I would be concerned but (for me at least) this hasn't been the case.

Solanine is a glycoalkaloid poison found in tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant. Seeds, nuts & beans have enzymes that need to be neutralized.

I'm guessing almost any food has pro's & con's to why we should or shouldn't eat it.

Peppers are most prevalent in hot weather cultures, before refrigeration spices, like peppers were used to kill the bacteria that caused food poisoning.

Out of the 43 spices, they found sufficient data to indicate antimicrobial properties on 30. The most effective were garlic, onion, allspice, and oregano, which inhibited 100% of the bacterial species they were tested against. Thyme, cinnamon, tarragon, cumin, cloves, lemon grass, bay leaf, capsicums (hot peppers), and rosemary all inhibited more than 75% of the bacteria they were tested against.

Scientists believe that the essential oils produced by plants, which give spices their distinct flavors, evolved to protect plants from attack by insects, bacteria, parasites, and other harmful organisms. Humans are affected by many of these same organisms, such as bacteria and fungi, that live on and in dead plant and animal tissue. If spices kill microorganisms or inhibit their production of toxins, then spice use might reduce the chances of contracting foodborne illnesses or food poisoning. The same chemicals in a plant that protect it from invading organisms might also be beneficial to humans.

How spicy foods can kill cancers - They found capsaicin, an ingredient of jalapeno peppers, triggers cancer cell death by attacking mitochondria, without harming surrounding healthy cells.

Capsaicin also reduced the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein whch is often produced in high quantities by prostate tumours.

Dr Bates said: "Capsaicin, for example, is already found in treatments for muscle strain and psoriasis - which raises the question of whether an adapted topical treatment could be used to treat certain types of skin cancer.

Characteristics and Use of Chipotle Peppers

Chipotle chiles appeared in the Northern Mexican region when Aztecs used to smoke food as a way of preservation. Since then, this item is one of the forms how people can eat Capsicum peppers.

The Chipotle word has its origin in Mexico and quickly expanded to the west area in the United States, where there was a big influence of Mexican culture. Today, this is a word known by most of the people around the world who enjoy spicy food and it usually refers to jalapeño pepper, even though other varieties can be smoked.

The expression “Chipotle” takes different names depending on the way it looks and the region where it is produced. Therefore, chipotle is known as:

  • “Morita”, which means small raspberry because of its purple colour;
  • “Chile Meco” (because it sounds like “seco” that means “dry”);
  • “Chile Ahumado” which in spanish means “smoked”.

Other name for the chipotle form is “tipico” which has a double sense that means “typic” and refers to some variety of jalapeño that is named like that. Often people have a confusion between chile tipico and the morita because they look alike. Nevertheless it is important to know that morita chiles are not smoked as long as tipico and thus they maintain their consistency more leathery but their flavour is not as rich as the second one.

Other varieties that are smoked are: Pequin, green jalapenos, Serrano, Pucunahucho, Habanero among others.

The word chipotle is known as a mildy spice used as an ingredient for special dishes or industrial products as sausages. Nevertheless, as long as the demand of this new form of hot pepper has increased, the chipotle habanero has recently been introduced into the market as an alternative for a hot and flavory chili.

Heat scale of smoked chiles depends on the variety which maintains the regular heat level. Therefore if habanero is one of the hottest Capsicum peppers (200.000 to 300.000 Scoville Units), the chipotle form is also very spicy. In the case of jalapeño, it maintains its regular flavor which is considered medium (between 5.000 to 10.000 Scoville units). Other forms such morita or tipico are located in the lowest part of the “Hot-o-meter” (heat thermometer.

The chipotle chiles can be used in many forms including chipotle chili pepper powder, chili mash, flakes which combined with other ingredients can create a good adobo.
